Terry Branstad

Former Governor of Iowa

Governor Branstad served four consecutive terms as Governor of Iowa from 1983-1999.  On a national level, he served as chairman of the National Governors Association and the Republican Governors Association, as well as the Governors Ethanol Commission. 

From 1997-1998 Branstad was chairman of the Education Commission of the United States. More recently, he was appointed by President George W. Bush to chair the President’s Commission for Excellence in Special Education, and has taught courses in public sector leadership at the University of Iowa. Prior to becoming Governor, Branstad served as Lieutenant Governor, State Representative, and was a member of the U.S. Army. 

He currently serves as President of Des Moines University.  A native of Leland, Iowa, Branstad earned an undergraduate degree from the University of Iowa in 1969 and a law degree from Drake University in Des Moines.
