Kate Michelman, longtime director of NARAL Pro-Choice America, accompanied presidential candidate John Edwards on Thursday to Manchester, where he talked about reducing global poverty.
Michelman recently became a senior adviser to Edwards. She said she chose Edwards, though some may have expected her to support Clinton, because the debate is about more than gender.
Michelman, who was once a single mother of three, pregnant with a fourth child and on welfare, said Edwards sees women as "the centerpiece of society" and knows that initiatives that help women will help a community as a whole.
"Marginalized women need a champion, and he is it," she said.
In Manchester, Edwards was also sporting the ONE white band - the symbol of the ONE campaign to fight AIDS and poverty around the world.
