Women of Nigeria 3

Yesterday I had the pleasure of meeting some very special guests, 5 women from Nigeria here on a 6 week trip to Iowa. They are here as a part of the Women in Nigeria Leadership Project with the Iowa Resource for International Service, based in Ames. It’s a 2 year project of the US State Department to help nurture the development of women in leadership positions in government, business, and other aspects of life in Nigeria.

Women of Nigeria

A forum was hosted at Grandview College in Des Moines where the women spoke to students, faculty, and members of the community. They each introduced themselves, spoke about their history, their work and challenges that Nigerian women face. Following, was a question and answer part after where there a good discussion about the Education system and Women as political leaders. Each woman had a powerful story and an impressive resume to back it. During their stay in Iowa, each will have an internship with a state department that parallels their work at home.

I got to talk with people at the event about ONE, what we do, and ways they can get involved. I gave each of the women a packet of info as well as ONE bands to take home. They are a truly inspiring group and it was an honor to meet them. I hope they enjoy their experience in Iowa.
